Hicks & Lawrence Limited announces the opening of its aviation school Discovery Aviation Academy (DAA) in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Hicks & Lawrence Limited is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Discovery Air Inc..

DAA
Discovery Aviation Academy (DAA) opened in September 2011, and DAA provides ground school and flight training to fixed-wing students from its facility in Sudbury, Ontario. Discovery Aviation Academy operates out of a modern facility conveniently located at the Greater Sudbury Airport. The DAA facility has ample office and classroom space for their flight training needs, and they also utilize a large 13,000 square foot hangar at the airport.

Canadian Air Operator
DAA is one of the first flight training centres to be part of a large Canadian air operator – Discovery Air. As Discovery Aviation Academy is part of Discovery Air, they have helped to close the significant gap that often exists between aviation schools and flight operators. DAA offers a variety of ground and flight training to meet the needs of any aspiring aviator.

Discovery Air Inc.
Discovery Air was founded in 2004. It’s a specialty aviation services company that operate across Canada and also in select locations internationally. Discovery Air has over 130 aircraft, and it is one of the largest air operators in Canada.

Discovery Air employs more than 600 flight crew, maintenance workers and support staff to successfully provide a variety of air transport, maintenance and logistics solutions to its many loyal customers.

Discovery Aviation Academy will leverage Discovery Air´s extensive network to help give its students exposure to real-world aviation and bridge the gap between graduation and employment.

Discovery Aviation Academy (DAA) offers many types of flight training including:

Recreational Pilot Permit

Private Pilot Licence

Commercial Pilot Licence

Night Rating

VFR OTT Rating

Multi Engine Rating

Instrument Rating

Instructor Rating

Commercial Flight Training
Discovery Aviation Academy has also partnered with Cambrian College to offer a very unique commercial flight training option. Student pilots pursuing commercial flight training at DAA may also combine their studies with the Cambrian College Business Certificate to enhance their aviation employment opportunities. Co-Op opportunities also exist.

Discovery Aviation Academy Fleet
The DAA Training Fleet includes different types of aircraft providing the student pilot access to various types of training.

Cessna 172 Skyhawk
The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is the typical flight training aircraft many student pilots first learn to fly. The C-172 is a high-wing, four-seat, single-engine aircraft and it is very popular for primary flight training.

The C-172 was first developed in the 1950s by Cessna Aircraft, and it’s the most successful mass produced light aircraft ever built. The C-172 is still in production today. The C172 is an ideal training aircraft. It is very comfortable and also quite forgiving to the new student pilot. The Cessna 172 is a favourite aircraft to learn how to fly in.

Cessna 337 Skymaster
The Cessna 337 Skymaster is another high-wing, four-seat airplane. However, the C-337 is a multi-engine aircraft and it is used by DAA for more advanced flight training.

Discovery Air utilizes the C-337 aircraft to provide Aerial Fire Detection in support of the Ontario Government’s Forest Fire Management Program. The Cessna 337 Skymaster is a high-wing, push-pull design with great visibility making it a perfect aircraft to assist with the location of forest fires. The push-pull design of the C-337 also allows for safe handling during engine-out situations. This makes the C-337 an ideal aircraft for multiple-engine training. When pilots choose to transition from single-engine to multi-engine aircraft, Discovery Aviation Academy can provide the required flight training in the Cessna 337 Skymaster.

Rockwell 500 Aero Commander
The Rockwell 500 Aero Commander aircraft is another airplane utilized by Discovery Aviation Academy for advanced flight training.

The Rockewll 500 Aero Commander is a high-wing, four-seat, high performance multi-engine aircraft. The Aero Commander aircraft are used by Discovery Air to provide Airspace and Aircraft Management (Birddog) services in support of the Ontario Government’s Forest Fire Management Program. Students at DAA may train on the AC50 towards earning their Multi-Engine Rating and Group I Instrument Rating.

Approved Maintenance Organization
DAA and Discovery Air have their own Approved Maintenance Organization to maintain their fleet of training aircraft and air operations aircraft. In addition, their Approved Maintenance Organization also provides third party maintenance for Bearskin Airlines, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, and many private clients.

Aviation Infrastructure
Discovery Aviation Academy leverages the existing aviation infrastructure already in place through Discovery Aviation and Hicks & Lawrence. With the addition of the flight training academy (DAA), it helps to establishes a pipeline of qualified personnel into the larger aviation organization.

Discovery Flight

Learn To Fly in Tillsonburg, Ontario

Tillsonburg Flight Training
The Tillsonburg Flying School is located in a quiet country airport in Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada. The Tillsonburg Airport is just north of Tillsonburg, and the airport does not have a control zone.

No Control Zone
With no control zone, student pilots will spend more time in the air, and less time on the ground waiting for clearance to taxi or take-off. This saves your money. Your flight training costs will be lower, as you have less wait time and more experience/time flying. At busy, control zone airports, you may experience delays as you sit on the taxi way waiting for takeoff clearance. At the Tillsonburg Airport, you will spend more time in the air getting training and less time on the ground.

Control Zone Training Available
When you are ready, you can experience Control zone training at air space only 15 minutes away. This gives you the benefit of both worlds. Less wait time for your core flight training, but advanced control zone training is readily available and only minutes away.

Picture Yourself Here!
Imagine yourself here in the cockpit of a Cessna 150 (two place) or Cessna 172 (four place) as you learn how to land an airplane. The Tillsonburg Flying School adapts its training to each individual student’s needs to help make the flight training a positive experience for every student pilot. Training is conducted in a Cessna 150 and a Cessna 172.

Types of Flight Training
The Tillsonburg Flying School provides flight training to help you earn your Recreational Pilot Permit, or your Private Pilot License. Additional ratings include your Night rating and the VFR (Visual Flight Rules) Over The Top rating, and many more.

Recreational Pilot Permit
The Recreational Pilot Permit allows domestic day flying in a single engine, non-high-performance aeroplane operated under VFR conditions. The Rec Permit is restricted to single engine aeroplanes designed for a maximum of four people, but with only one passenger. (Two people including the pilot)

Requirements for Recreational Pilot Permit *

Minimum Age 14 to obtain a Student Pilot Permit (Solo permit) (i.e. student pilot may fly the aeroplane alone after a flight instructor is satisfied with their ability to safely fly the aircraft)

Minimum Age 16 to obtain a Recreational Pilot Permit (i.e. Rec Permit granted, and pilot may take a passenger with them)

Medical fitness category: 1, 3, or 4

Minimum flight time required: 25 hours (minimum 15 dual instruction hours, and minimum 5 solo flight hours)

Requirements for Private Pilot License *

The Tillsonburg Flying School offers Pilot Ground School classes for various pilot licenses and ratings including the Recreational Pilot Permit and the Private Pilot License.

Ground School classes are typically held on weekday evenings, and run for 17 consecutive weeks.

Ground School Topics
The Pilot Ground School covers many topics to prepare the student and help them understand the theory of flight. The student will also become knowledgeable in the Canadian Air Regulations (CARs) that they need to know and understand to be a safe and responsible pilot.

Pilot Resources
During the pilot ground school classes, the student pilot will learn to use many pilot resources such as maps and charts, NOTAMs (Notice To Airmen), flight calculators, METARs (Meteorological Aerodrome Report), TAFs (Terminal Aerodrome Forecast), POH (Pilot’s Operating Handbook), Weight and Balance Charts, etc.

Pilot Ground School Topics Covered:

Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs)

Intro to flying

Theory of Flight

Take an Introductory Flight (Demonstration Flight) at the Tillsonburg Flying School.

A flight instructor will explain the primary flight controls to you as you pre-flight the aircraft. You will walk around the Cessna airplane, and inspect the control surfaces and the ensure the airplane is ready to be flown.

Left Seat in the Cockpit
For your introductory flight, you will be in the “Left Seat” of the Cockpit, as your flight instructor explains the basic flight instruments and the gauges. This will be your very first flight lesson with a flight instructor. And, if you decide to continue with your flight training, this introductory flight will even count towards your flight time hours.

You Can Fly!
During your Introductory Flight, you will have the exciting opportunity to actually fly the airplane. You will take the controls of the aircraft, under the close supervision of your flight instructor, who will be seated in the “Right Seat” of the cockpit. This enables you to experience the thrill of flying an aircraft for the very first time. You will find out what is needed to be a pilot, and your flight instructor will answer any questions you might have about earning your pilot license. The cost of your introductory flight is only $60 plus applicable HST.

Homebuilt Aircraft
Have you ever thought about building your own aircraft?

There will be many homebuilders and amateur builders at the event who can share their experience. As homebuilt aircraft become increasingly popular, it’s a great opportunity to learn from others who already have built their own flying airplanes.

Talk to pilots who have built airplanes from kits including both ”quick-build” kits and the traditional “parts kits” available today. There may even be a few builders at the event who have built their airplanes from plans, and they had to hand fabricate all the individual components.

LearnToFly.ca editor Geoff McKay recently went for a demo flight with pilot/owner Wayne Hadath in his homebuilt F1 Rocket. The Cessna 172 is an ideal airplane for learning to fly. Your introductory discovery flight will be in a Cessna 172, and this is a favourite aircraft for many student pilots.

Skyhawk
The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a four-place, single engine aircraft. It is a fixed-wing aircraft, and the wing is located above the fuselage, making the Cessna 172 a high-wing aircraft.

The Cessna 172 was first manufactured in 1956, and they are still in production. Based on this longevity, and the popularity of the C-172, it is considered to be the most successful mass produced light aircraft in history.

Most pilots learned to fly, or have some flight experience in either the Cessna 172, or in its related two-place model the Cessna 152.

The Cessna 172 and the Cessna 152 aircraft are sturdy, reliable, and great for flight training. Chances are, you will spend many hours in a C-172 as you continue with your flying lessons. More recently, Cessna released their LSA category aircraft known as the Cessna 162 Skycatcher.

Sontair students will enjoy the many benefits of the Chatham-Kent airport. It’s one of the only flight training Airports in Ontario where it take less than five minutes for pilots to fly to the designated practice areas. Unlike many airports, where it may take more than 25 minutes to fly out to the practice area, the student pilot can quickly be practicing their flight training exercises.

The close proximity of the practice area to the airport ensures the majority of your flight training time is educational. This will save you time and money as you earn your pilot licence and ratings.

The Chatham-Kent Municipal Airport is an ideal location for student flight training. It is an uncontrolled airport, and this allows the student pilot to substantially reduce their wait times on ground. At many other airports in south western Ontario, pilots may experience ground wait times before they receive their departure clearance.

The Chatham-Kent Airport has a paved runway with 24 hour access. If you are earning your night rating, or flying to the airport after hours, the airport is convenient and accessible.

Sontair Facilities
Sontair has ample hangar space and training classrooms conveniently located on site at the Chatham-Kent Municipal Airport.

Learn to Fly with Sontair in the relaxed and open space surrounding the Chatham-Kent Municipal Airport. Avoid the congested and busy airspace of the other airports. As a student pilot, you will enjoy more time flying and spend less time on the ground waiting for clearance or other air traffic.

International Students – Flight Training
Sontair advertises a Transport Canada approved syllabus that is DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation, India) compliant.

Sontair promises to provide assistance in obtaining your Student Visas, and Sontair also promotes their job placement assistance they provide upon successful completion of the course. Sontair also provides graduating students with assistance to help them convert their Canadian Commercial Pilot License to their respective country’s Pilot License when returning from Canada to their home country.

200+ Hours

Their fleet includes: 2 Cessna 172M, 1 Cessna 150, 1 Cessna 182K, 1 Cessna 182E, 2 Piper Navajo PA31-350.

Pictured here is a 4 place Cessna 172 airplane.

Piper Navajo
The Guardian Aerospace fleet includes two Piper Navajo PA31-350 twin engine aircraft. These light twins have two 350 hp engines. The Piper Navajo cruises at 170 Knots, and seats 8 passengers in addition to the pilot.

When you are ready for Multi-Engine training, Guardian Aerospace has the aircraft to meet your training requirements.

Prince George Airport – CYXS

Prince George has the 3rd longest runway in Canada!
When learning to fly, you will perform many ”Touch and Go” circuits with your flight instructor. This allows you to perform a controlled landing of the airplane, but instead of coming to a complete stop, you accelerate and take-off again. This saves time, and helps you to advance your landing skills in less time.

With the extra long runway at Prince George, you will be able to do TWO “Touch and Go” landings in one circuit. This maximizes your training and minimizes your cost. You may practice extra landings in less time!

The Prince George, BC, airport is not a busy airport. This gives the student pilot more time in the air, as you spend less time waiting on the ground to take-off. The light traffic in the area may include some regional carriers, 737′s, 747′s and cargo planes, but you will not have to wait long before you can take-off or land. This maximizes your flight time, and reduces your idle ground wait time.

Controlled Airport
The Prince George Airport is a Controlled Airport with a Ground and Tower Controller. This helps student pilots to learn the important procedures and radio communications for flying in controlled airspace. The student pilot will benefit from the controlled environment, while at the same time enjoy the benefits of a less busy airport.

Cross Wind Practice
The Prince George Airport has three paved runways, and two grass runways. The five runways provide an excellent opportunity for student pilots (and experienced pilots) to practice flying in any type of wind condition.

The practice area, where student pilots practice their flying exercises such as steep turns and stalls, is located very close to the airport. Within a just few minutes of clearing the Airport Control Zone, the student pilot will be able to start their first flying exercise. At many airports, pilots spend up to half their lesson time getting to the practice area. For faster training, and less cost, the close proximity of the practice area is a huge advantage!

Vanderhoof Airport – CAU4

Relaxed Atmosphere
The Vanderhoof, BC Aerodrome is great for training because there is very little air traffic. The student pilot will enjoy a very relaxed atmosphere for learning to fly.

At Vanderhoof, the student pilot can concentrate on Flight Training instead of constantly worrying about excessive competing traffic in the same airspace. As you learn to fly, you will have more time to learn about the airplane and your flying skills instead of waiting for many other aircraft in the circuit. The reduced air traffic will help make your initial learning experience less stressful.

The Vanderhoof Aerodrome also has both paved and grass runways, and you can learn to land and take-off on both types of surfaces.

Experienced Flight Instructors
Guardian Aerospace Flight Instructors are also Charter Pilots. These experienced instructors have valuable “real life” experience, and they can pass along their knowledge and experience to help student pilots to safely learn how to fly.

Charter Flight Experience
Guardian Aerospace will provide you with a great flight training experience. You will develop your pilot skills well beyond the basic minimums required to pass your flight test. Guardian Aerospace will help you to become a safe and successful commercial pilot with a long career ahead. Student pilots are invited to come along on charter flights to give them free additional experience. This real world flight experience will be a great asset in your progressive flight training.

The Great War Flying Museum (GWFM) is located onsite at the Brampton Airport. The Open House and Fly-In will feature many of the vintage aircraft from GWFM.

GWFM hosts World War I Airplanes and an incredible W.W. I Museum in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. GWFM is Canada’s only Great War flying aircraft museum and it features airplanes, uniforms, medals and much more.

GWFM
Brampton based GWFM was formed in 1970. It’s an all-volunteer group dedicated to recreating the sights, sounds and feel of World War One combat aircraft. GWFM honours the pilots who served with gallantry and distinction during the Great War of 1914 – 1918.

The Great War Flying Museum builds, maintains and flies W.W. I replica and vintage fighter aircraft. You will experience the earliest days of aviation at the Brampton Airport Open House.

The Barrie Flying Club (BFC) operates 7 days per week from its home-base in Barrie, Ontario. BFC specializes in Ultralight Aircraft Flight Training. The Ultralight category of Aircraft provides a great way for aviation enthusiasts to earn their wings in as little as 2 weeks!

PPUL
The Pilot Permit Ultralight (PPUL) is the quickest way to earn your wings! Fly every day, and you can earn your PPUL in only 2 weeks.

Only have time for weekend flying?
Many BFC students earn their PPUL in only 6 weeks by flying on Saturdays and Sundays only. Don’t delay, earn your wings today!

After earning your PPUL, you may fly solo in any aircraft that falls in the ultralight category. Like other Pilot permits, certificates and licenses, you must meet Transport Canada specified criteria including specific knowledge, skill and experience requirements.

PPUL Knowledge Requirements
The Transport Canada Knowledge Requirements for your PPUL are easily learned through ground school or self study. The candidate will then be required to pass a written test consisting of multiple choice questions. Student Pilots may download the essential study guides and practice exams directly from Transport Canada.

PPUL Skill and Experience Requirements
The student pilot will earn the practical skill requirements through hands-on training and flight instruction. Their flight instructor will guide them through all the necessary flight manoeuvres they are required to master for their PPUL. During their flight training, the student pilot must accumulate the required dual and solo hours of flying time to meet the Experience requirements for the PPUL.

Letter of Competency
For a Private Pilot Licence (PPL), the student pilot must take a flight test with a Transport Canada examiner. With the PP-UL, your flight instructor will issue a ‘Letter of Competency’. This will be enough for Transport Canada (TC) to issue your Pilot Permit Ultralight certificate. However, a flight test with a TC examiner will be required if you wish to carry a passenger. You need your Passenger Rating to take a friend flying with you. Many PPUL pilots will want the added privilege of carrying a passenger, and will therefore proceed with earning their Passenger Rating.

The Chief Flight Instructor (CFI) at the Barrie Flying Club (BFC) is Eugene Dworecki. He will help you earn your wings, and guide you through earning your PPUL. From the ground school through the issuance of your PPUL, Eugene will help you achieve your goal of learning to fly.

2 Day Ground School
The Barrie Flying Club offers a 2-Day, weekend Ground School for the PP-UL course. After completing the PP-UL ground school, you will be familiar with the necessary knowledge areas covered by the Transport Canada ULTRA Exam.

After signing up for the ground school, you will be assigned some pre-reading to help you prepare ahead of time for the two days of classroom instruction. The required reading list and reference materials will be provided to you by BFC when you enrol in the PPUL training program.

Introductory Flight
Take to the air, and enjoy an aerial view from the cockpit. Your Introductory Flight will put you behind the controls, and you will experience flying for your first time.

Your Discovery Flight Experience begins with an introduction to the aircraft. Your instructor will explain the pre-flight safety checks carried out by pilots before every flight. You will learn about the airplane, and the importance of safety. Your pre-flight inspection of the airplane will include checking the controls, ailerons, flaps, rudder, leading edge of the wing, instruments, fuel and oil levels, suspension, tires, pitot static system, fuselage and other important parts of the airframe.

After thoroughly inspecting the airplane, you and your instructor will climb inside the cockpit to prepare for your discovery flight. You’ll be seated in the pilot’s seat (Left Seat), and your instructor will guide you through a series of additional checks including avionics (radio), local air traffic, and weather conditions.

Take-Off
Your instructor will taxi the aircraft into position, and after receiving your clearance from the tower, you will experience taking off into the skies above. Shortly after take-off, your instructor will begin demonstrating the basics of flying. It’s your first flying lesson, and you will be given an opportunity to fly the airplane. Your instructor will give you control of the aircraft, and help you through some simple turns, climbs, descents, and straight and level flight. When the flight is almost over, your instructor will bring you and the aircraft back down to the airport for a post-flight briefing.

Be certain to bring your camera. You will want some great shots from the cockpit as you fly over the beautiful scenery. Discovery flights are also a great gift idea. Book an introductory flight for yourself, or someone you know who loves aviation.

Contact the Barrie Flying Club today to book your Discovery Flight. Take your first step to earn your Pilot Permit Ultralight (PPUL) certificate.
