Congratulations to the nine finalists in the 2011 Webster Memorial Trophy Competition. These finalists will compete for the coveted title as Canada’s Top Amateur Pilot of 2011.
100+ Milestone
This year, the Webster Trophy Competition broke the 100 plus Milestone with 105 applicants competing for the trophy. Applicants came from across Canada representing many Flight Schools to compete in the Regional phase of the competition. The nine top candidates will move forward to compete for the final prize and right to claim the John C. Webster Trophy and Bronze Webster Medallion.

Sponsors and Supporters
Thanks to all the wonderful Sponsors and Supporters of the competition who helped make 2011 an incredible year with over 100 applicants competing. LearnToFly.ca is a proud Supporter of the Webster Memorial Trophy Competition, and we were very excited to see this 100+ Milestone achieved this year.

The 100+ Milestone achievement is shared with all the participating Flight Training Units who encouraged their student pilots to join the competition. One of the main sponsors of the Webster Trophy Competition is Air Canada. Thanks are extended to all of the supporters and sponsors who provided many forms of support including financial assistance, prizes, media coverage and posters. This 100+ Milestone achievement could not have been accomplished without the overwhelming support and involvement of everyone involved.

John C. Webster

Webster Trophy
The Webster Trophy resides permanently at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa. The Rockcliffe Flying Club has been chosen as the host school for the event and preparations are already under way for a major celebration, banquet and awards ceremony.

Early Bird Draw Winners
Webster competitors are encouraged to enter early. By waiting too long, many potential competitors miss the competition deadline. The applicant’s submission may be delayed due to unexpected delays in completing the required flight tests because of weather, scheduling or aircraft maintenance. To avoid disappointment, candidates are encouraged to enter long before the deadline approaches.

As an incentive, Early Bird Prizes are awarded.

The Webster Memorial Trophy Competition would not be the success it is without the dedicated and hard work of Flight Instructors across Canada.

With over 100 qualified candidates entering the Webster Trophy Competition this year, it was important to also recognize the hard work of the many dedicated Flight Instructors from Flight Schools across the country.

It takes many dedicated flight instructors to teach the eager student pilots and private pilots who compete in the Webster Competition each year. The tireless Flight Instructors help the individuals to prepare for the competition and be better candidates for the Top Amateur Pilot award.

Flight Instructor Draw
In order to honour the hard work of the Flight Instructors, a separate Flight Instructor Draw was established. The Flight Instructors named in the Applicant’s packages are eligible for recognition and prizes.

With the help of supporting organizations, the Flight Instructor Draw included wonderful prizes donated this year.

Congratulations and thanks to the Flight Instructors who helped to instruct and prepare the student pilots who competed in the 2011 Webster Memorial Trophy Competition.

The 2011 Webster Memorial Trophy Competition is off to a great start with twenty one approved competitors already signed up.

Normally, applications for this annual competition do not start to arrive until the end of February. Even then, there are usually only a few early applications in the beginning of the year, with most of the applicants coming in much later. As the inviting spring weather approaches, pilots are thinking more about the fun of flying. That’s typically when the number of competitors builds progressively until the application cut-off date in June.

2011 Competition
It’s great to see there are already twenty-one competitors who have already applied and been accepted for this year’s competition. This is an excellent indicator of the awareness that the programme has generated recently and of the high degree of interest in participation by the aviation community.

Webster Memorial Trophy Competition
LearnToFly.ca is a proud supporter of the Webster Trophy Competition, and we are very excited about the great response for 2011. We encourage all Private Pilots to consider entering this excellent competition. This annual competition is open to Private Pilots in Canada. James Pouget was the 2010 winner of the Webster Trophy, and you could be the winner for 2011. But, first, you must apply!

2011 Target: 100+ Competitors
The Webster Team is striving to encourage a record number of competitors this year. They hope to break the 100 mark and by these early signs it seems to be a distinct possibility.

Helpful Pilot Tips
Be certain to browse these Top 10 Tips from last year’s Top Pilots if you want the inside scoop on how to succeed as a top pilot.

We’re thankful for the insightful and helpful tips from these top pilots, and we hope the tips they have compiled will help you become Canada’s Top Amateur Pilot for 2011.

June 15 2011
The Webster competition is a year-long event. It officially begins on June 16th of each year with applications being accepted for the annual competition. The applications are accepted until midnight EDT on the following June 15th. At that time, the nine regional finalists are determined and then announced on the next day. The competitors must complete and submit the application package, including the associated flight test reports, before the deadline to qualify. The national portion of the competition takes place in late August to determine the status of Top Amateur Pilot in Canada for the respective year.

The 2010 Competition Finalists are pictured here at the Webster Award Ceremony. Picture yourself at the 2011 Award Ceremony, after you enter and qualify!

Flight Training Units
The number of Flight Training Units participating in the Webster Trophy Competition increases significantly ever year. The flight schools have the added benefit of potential extra training revenue when their customers (pilots and student pilots) request additional flight training hours to prepare for the competition. The Flight Training Units can proactively encourage their members and customers to join the competition. These flight schools can also suggest the applicants book some additional training hours to compete more successfully in the competition.

$3,000 Award
Flight Training Units may also win the Webster/Sennheiser annual award of $3,000. This goes to the Flight Training Unit that successfully encourages the greatest number of pilots to enter. This award in turn is then applied to the additional training of up to four of the school’s applicants.

Extra Flight Training Revenue
Many Flight Training Units have come up with innovative ways of encouraging their members and students to participate. Some flight schools are offering cash bonuses to their instructors who encourage students to enter the Webster Trophy Competition. One school came up with the idea to then increase the Instructor bonus if their entrant(s) becomes a finalist and again if their entrant(s) becomes the winner.

One Flight Training Unit’s CFI is encouraging many of their excellent students to enter at the time of completing their flight test and applying for their licence. Another school is absorbing the administration fee of $25 to enter so that they can encourage their customers to enter. All these innovative ideas have been generated by the schools themselves adding to the overall excitement of the programme.

Young and Old
The Webster Memorial Trophy Competition is open to all amateur powered-pilots in Canada who hold a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or higher, regardless of their age or experience. The competition is both challenging and fun.

Webster Memorial Trophy Competition
The Webster Memorial Trophy Competition is an annual event intended to declare the “Top Amateur Pilot in Canada”. Special to LearnToFly.ca, these Top Amateur Pilots have been sharing their Top 10 Pilot Tips. These proven Aviators have great tips for anyone learning to fly. This is the fourth instalment in our series of Top 10 Piloting Tips, and Cameron MacLean has some excellent Flight Training Tips to share.

Flight Training
At the time of the competition, Cameron held a Private Pilot Licence and was moving toward a Commercial Licence through Coastal Pacific Aviation in Abbotsford, BC. Cameron also held a night rating.

Coastal Pacific Aviation Ltd.
Coastal Pacific offices and facilities are located at the Abbotsford International Airport. Their primary flight training facility is located in Abbotsford, British Columbia. They have been training pilots since 1974.

Loves to Fly
Cameron MacLean loves to fly! Cameron says his dad took him flying when he was just six weeks old and he has held an interest in aviation for as long as he can remember. It was in Grade 11, when Cameron decided he wanted a career in aviation. He made his decision that he would like to fly professionally and he began learning to fly in March 2009.

Cross Country
Exactly one year after Cameron’s first solo, he flew a cross country flight in a Piper Cherokee from North Bay, Ontario to Langley, British Columbia. Cameron’s father was in the right seat (co-pilot) with him when Cameron made this milestone flight.

Here’s Cameron’s Top 10 List:

Detailed flight planning is the foundation for a great flight.

Stay ahead of the aircraft. If you are not doing anything, there is probably something to do.

Different people have different limits. Know yours.

Be professional. People are always watching – even if you think they aren’t.

Know as much as you can about your aircraft and then some.

If you don’t know something ask somebody!

Aviation is a very small world. You will always run into someone you know so never burn bridges!

If you are not comfortable with something voice your opinion.

Aviate, Navigate, Communicate!

Have fun and take pride in everything you do.

Top 10 Pilot Tips from a Top 10 Amateur Pilot

Michael Ciezadlo was happy to share his Top 10 Pilot Tips, and here’s what Mike said:

“Kind of basic rules, but I do swear by them!”

Here’s Mike’s Top 10 Pilot Tips:

If the weather looks marginal, it probably is. It is better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than it is to be in the air wishing you were on the ground.

Plan cross countries in your spare time to keep flight planning skills sharp.

If at all possible, make every take-off and landing count. Try to stray from doing normal take offs and landings and augment them with specialities (i.e. Short or Soft Field).

On cross countries do not rely on fancy electronics (i.e. Auto Pilot, GPS, etc.). Map reading is an important skill and could save your life one day.

Pretend every flight is a flight test. By trying to envision this every time, it reduces the stress on the actual day.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Flight computers can be quite accurate; though electronics do fail and batteries do die. Make every attempt to keep current on how to use an E6-B.

If the opportunity arises, try to log some time on a tail dragger. This form of flying demands excellent stick and rudder control.

Fly the plane; fly the plane; fly the plane.

Have Fun! If flying was not fun, then why would people do it?

Top 10 Pilot Tips from a Top 10 Amateur Pilot

Here’s Danielle Furgason’s Top 10 List:

Check the weather often, not just when flying. Learning to decode TAFs, METARs, GFAs etc. comes with practice.

Every new pilot has some bad flights – don’t let it discourage you! Learn from all of your mistakes.

Talking on the radio may seem intimidating at first, but eventually this garbled nonsense will become your second language.

Don’t focus on  only one  instrument. Take information from several instruments to figure out what’s going on.

ATC (Air Traffic Control) is more scared of you than you are of them.  Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification on any instructions or clearances you don’t understand.

Study! Know  all the  steps to every flight manoeuvre before you get into the airplane to practice it.

Your image in aviation sticks with you! From the very first day you start flying to  your last flight  make sure you conduct yourself in the way you wish to be remembered.

On a flight test the  two  things to  remember  are HALT Check and Refer to Checklist.

Practice good situational awareness even when you are with your instructor. It will make your  solos less scary!

Don’t get behind your airplane!  Make sure you know what’s going on right now, what’s coming up next, and plan  your next action or procedure.

The Webster Memorial Trophy Competition selects the “Top Amateur Pilot in Canada” every year.

This annual competition was started in 1932, and it’s committed to finding and recognizing the Top Amateur Pilots from across Canada. It was interrupted once by World War II and again in 1954 due to escalating administrative costs. The Webster Competition was reactivated in 1980 with the support of sponsors, and a dedicated and hard working team. This important competition continues its annual commitment to locating and declaring Canada’s Top Amateur Pilot each year.

Recognition
The Webster Trophy Competition is recognized as a national sporting event by the Canadian Sport Aeroplane Association (CSAA) and the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI).

The Webster Trophy Competition is one of Canada’s most prestigious aviation events, and it is ideal for Amateur pilots aspiring to a career in aviation. Winners of Webster Trophy are recognized for their incredible achievement in aviation.

History
Doctor J. C. Webster of Shediac, New Brunswick established the John C. Webster Memorial Trophy Competition to perpetuate the memory of his late son, John.

Sadly, John Webster lost his life in an aircraft accident at St. Hubert, Quebec. John was practicing his aerobatic flying to represent Canada in the Trans-Canada Air Pageant. One month before his death, in July 1931, John represented Canada in the King’s Cup Air Race in England flying his Curtiss-Reid Rambler.

The Webster Trophy and Webster Medallion
The Webster Trophy is prominently displayed at the National Aviation Museum in Ottawa. Every year, for the Webster Memorial Trophy Presentation Banquet, the Trophy is made available for a symbolic presentation to the winner. It is then returned to its home at the National Aviation Museum.

The renowned Canadian sculptor Robert Tait MacKenzie (1867-1938) designed the Webster Trophy. The trophy is an elegant bronze figure depicting the mythical Greek god, Icarus and it symbolically represents youth and flight.

The John Webster Medal for Good Airmanship
The Webster Medallion is a carefully crafted bronze medallion depicting the Webster Trophy figure, and the inscription “The John Webster Medal for Good Airmanship”.
