Pilot Training
Student Pilots may choose from three Pilot Training Streams including Recreational Pilot Permit, Private Pilot License and Commercial Pilot License.
Recreational Pilot Permit
With a Recreational Pilot licence, you may fly with a maximum of one passenger during the daylight hours in fair weather conditions, and within Canada. Flying must be VFR (Visual Flight Rules), and the Rec. Permit does not allow for additional endorsements such as Night Rating or Instrument Rating. However, a Float Endorsement is allowed with the Recreational Pilot Permit.
Your flight training and hours logged to obtain your Recreational Pilot Permit may also be used if you plan to upgrade to a Private Pilot License in the future.
A category 4 or higher medical is required for a Recreational Pilot license. Transport Canada requires that you complete a minimum of 25 hours of flight training before obtaining a Recreational Pilot Permit. This training must include a minimum of 5 hours of solo flying and a minimum of 15 hours of dual flight experience.
Private Pilot License
The Private Pilot License allows you to take more than one passenger, and your licence is valid all around the world. You are still limited to fair weather conditions (i.e. VFR), but you may build on your license by adding on endorsements such as an IFR Rating (Instrument Flight Rules) and Night Rating or Multi-Engine Rating, etc.
A category 3 or higher medical is required to obtain a Private Pilot licence. Transport Canada requires that you complete a minimum of 45 hours of flight training before obtaining a Private Pilot License. This training must include a minimum of 12 hours of solo flying and a minimum of 17 hours of dual flight experience.
Commercial Pilot License
At GHA you can build hours towards your Commercial Pilot License (CPL). Transport Canada requires a minimum of 200 hours of flight time including a minimum of 100 hours of Pilot in Command to obtain a CPL. A Commercial Pilot licence will allow you to fly for “hire or reward” and work for a Commercial Air Service.
