Over 40 Vintage Aircraft
Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum has a collection of over 40 aircraft that have been meticulously restored and maintained. Many of these priceless aircraft are still being flown today, and some are extremely rare.

Over 40 Years
Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum moved into a hangar at the Hamilton Airport back in 1972. CWHM celebrated 40 years of heritage flying in 2012, and the museum has made a great and valuable contribution to maintaining aviation history in Canada.

CWHM Hamilton
Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum maintains a large 108,000 square foot premises at the Hamilton Airport. CWHM’s modern delta wing shaped building is home to the more than 40 vintage aircraft they have acquired and restored. Visitors are encouraged to visit CWHM year round to view the many static and flying aircraft that make up their rare collection of warbirds and vintage aircraft. CWHM keeps alive the vibrant and nostalgic history of these vintage aircraft that span many decades of aviation history.

Many of the CWHM aircraft are over 70 years old. The Hamilton Air Show is a wonderful and exciting opportunity for everyone to enjoy both the static display and Flying Demonstration of many rare and vintage warplanes. In addition to the CWHM collection of aircraft, the Air Show will feature many other aircraft and flying performances.

The Canadian Aviation Expo is billed as Canada’s Premier Aviation Expo and Trade Show. 2013 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Canadian Aviation Expo, and it will be bigger and better than ever with the combined hosting of WAS and the Aviation Expo at the Waterloo Airport.

Family Fun from the Ground Up!
The Waterloo Air Show will include static aircraft on display, aviation exhibits, vendors, kids’ activities, rides and much more. There will be family fun, from the ground up! The event will be an incredible weekend of aviation. You can meet and talk with pilots, aircraft owners, aircraft builders, flight instructors and many aviation enthusiasts and professionals.

The Canadian Forces CF-18 Hornet Demonstration Team is always an Air Show crowd favourite. The roar of the CF-18 Jet engine is easily recognized as the Hornet pilot demonstrates the extreme capabilities of one of the most advanced fighter jets ever designed.

CF-18 Cockpit Video
Watch this ‘Behind the Scenes CF-18 Video Tour‘ for a preview of the high performance CF-18 demonstration you can expect again at this year’s Waterloo Air Show. The CF-18 Hornet pilot will perform amazing aerobatics as he executes High-G manoeuvres right before your eyes. The 2013 CF-18 Hornet Demo Team pilot is Captain Patrick “Flocho” Pollen.

Dirty Roll Take-Off
Don’t miss the insane, ‘Dirty Roll Take-Off’ as the CF-18 Hornet pilot performs a low level roll just seconds after lifting off from the runway. The gear of the aircraft are still extended, as the CF-18 Hornet rolls upside down just feet above the ground. This signature CF-18 Hornet Demo Team manoeuvre demonstrates the incredible performance capabilities of both the Jet and the highly skilled pilot.

CF-18 Paint Scheme – The Common Thread
Every year, the CF-18 Hornet Demo Jet features a new custom paint theme, created by Design Director Jim Belliveau. The 2013 theme is ‘The Common Thread’. Canada is fortunate to have a rich diversity, and the 2013 CF-18 demo team celebrates “The Common Thread” that ties Canadians of diverse backgrounds together.

The Jet Aircraft Museum (JAM) T-33 577 “Mako Shark” is another Jet you will see at the WAS with an incredible paint scheme. The T-33 Silver Star Jet Trainer was painted as the “Mako Shark”, and this Jet is a favourite for everyone.

The kids will love seeing the “Mako Shark” performing at the Waterloo Air Show. The “Mako Shark” even has it’s own theme song as it performs. The crowds are energized as they hear the “Shark Theme” music in anticipation of seeing the “Mako Shark” overhead in the skies.

Everything Aviation
The combined Waterloo Air Show and Canadian Aviation Expo will be a great opportunity for you to experience and see Everything Aviation! There will be jets, gliders, aerobatic aircraft, transport aircraft, general aviation aircraft, corporate jets, war planes, new aircraft, vintage aircraft, helicopters and even kit planes on display or flying. You can browse aviation products, talk to flight instructors about learning to fly, and even book a scenic flight.

Wayne Hadath F1 Rocket
Waterloo area resident, Wayne Hadath, will be at the Waterloo Air Show, performing with his Homebuilt F1 Rocket Sport Wing Racing Aircraft. It’s hard to believe, but Wayne built this record setting, fast airplane – himself!

Homebuilt Airplane
Yes, the F1 Rocket is a homebuilt aircraft that has set several speed records and it flies at nearly 250 mph. The two seat, tandem, aircraft is painted in a custom black and white paint scheme that makes it easily recognizable.

Little Bit
Wayne calls his F1 Rocket “Little Bit”, and you will see this single engine, propeller aircraft at the Waterloo Air Show. Wayne is a friendly guy, and he would be happy to talk to anyone about the fun, challenges and rewards of building a homebuilt aircraft.

Amazing Air Show
The Waterloo Air Show is always an amazing air show. The runway and taxiways are relatively close to the crowd line, and this gives the audience a close-up view of the performing aircraft as they taxi to the runway and take-off. The air show performances are always great, and the many static aircraft make this a great aviation event. The addition of the Canadian Aviation Expo makes for an truly special and fantastic event this year.

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds are a feature event at the Waterloo Air Show. The Snowbirds are a precision, aerobatic, formation flying team. They are an iconic symbol of Canada, and they proudly represent Canada, the Canadian Forces, and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). The spectacular and daring performance of the Snowbirds will be one of the highlights of the WAS.

Nine Tutor Jets
Nine Tutor Jets fly in formation above the crowds, with only a few feet separating the jets. Watch this ‘Behind the Scenes Snowbirds Video Tour‘ for a Cockpit preview of the exciting Snowbirds performance you can expect this year at the WAS. The Snowbirds Jets generate smoke trails, and you can see the nine lines of smoke trailing behind the jets during the formation flying performance. The Snowbirds are an inspiration to many young aviation enthusiasts.

Air Show Performers *
There will be Air Show Performers (in the air), and also Static Aircraft on display during the event. Come early and walk around the static displays as you get up close and personal with the aircraft and pilots. Although the performers, aircraft and displays are subject to change (based on weather, flight conditions, aircraft maintenance, etc.), here’s a list of some of the performers and aircraft scheduled to be at the WAS and Canadian Aviation Expo.

Be Prepared – Preparation is key.

For every flight, you should be just as prepared as if you were taking your flight test.

Stay Professional at all times.

Don’t forget to fly the aircraft – in all your flying exercises – Aviate first.

Be Confident – and always stay Vigilant.

Get to Know the limits of your aircraft – try executing a Chandelle (180 Degree Climbing Turn) with your fight instructor.

Share your experiences with other pilots.

During navigation, always consider your ground track and correct for the wind.

For your Cross Country Flight – be Organized.

Enjoy Every Moment! You are already lucky to fly!

Louis Rousseau – Pilot
Louis concludes his Top Pilot Tips with a reminder to Enjoy Every Moment!

It’s important for student pilots and pilots to remember the joy of flying, and to appreciate the thrill and excitement of learning to fly.

Speed and Altitude
Louis also stresses the importance for every good pilot to always watch their altitude and speed (velocity). During every flight maneuvre, exercise and phase of flight, the pilot must monitor their attitude, altitude and speed to maintain safe control of the aircraft.

What Makes a Great Pilot?
Louis believes a pilot must be patient and determined at all times. Flying is the “School of Patience” according to Louis. As you are learning to fly, work hard, and be patient and determined. A good aviator is always well prepared, professional and organized.

And remember, always have fun!

The Snowbirds are a Canadian Military Formation Aerobatics Team originally known as the Canadian Forces Air Demonstration Team. Formed in 1971, the Snowbirds are now known as the Canadian Forces 431 Air Demonstration Squadron operated from Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

Red, White and Blue
The Snowbirds are easily recognized by their distinctive Red, White and Blue paint scheme. The Blue “Snowbirds” signature line with accompanying blue stripe separates the primarily white top side of the Tutor Jet from the red bottom side of the aircraft. The red bottom of the Snowbird Jet also includes the large white silhouette of the Snowbird Jet Logo prominently emblazoned for everyone to see as they fly overhead.

Nine Snowbird Jet Formation
The Rudder of each jet includes the large identifying number for each of the eleven Snowbird Jets on the team. There are nine Tutor Jets for aerobatic performances and two spare Tutor Jets that fly with the team as they travel.

Aerobatic Manoeuvres
The Snowbirds Air Show performances include full-up aerobatics including formation flying during loops, rolls, inverted flight, and clovers. Some of their signature manoeuvres include the Canada Burst, the Downward Bomb Burst, and solo head-on crosses.

The Snowbirds Team, Pilots, Air Show Performances, and Snowbird Jets are all showcased in our Snowbirds Photo Gallery. Take a closer look at the Canadair CT-114 Tutor Jet and cockpit. Browse the Snowbirds Photo Gallery for exclusive, close-up pictures of the cockpit and aircraft.

Thumb Up if you Like the Snowbirds
The Snowbirds are the highlight of most air shows, and they are usually the Grand Finale for an Air Show. The Snowbirds are loved by everyone, and a highly anticipated finish for the show. Anticipation builds, and everyone gets excited as the Snowbirds are about to perform. Feel free to comment and share the Snowbirds Video, and “Thumb Up” (Like) the video, article and photos if you love the Snowbirds!

Canadair CT-114 Tutor
The Snowbird Tutor Jet is a two seat, jet-powered aircraft introduced in the early 1960′s. Built by Canadair, the Tutor Jet is commonly known as the CT-114 Tutor. (Canadair Model Number CL-41, or CL-41A) With a max gross take-off weight of 9,000 lbs, the Tutor Jet performs very well as a trainer. It has a service ceiling of 41,000 feet and a max speed of 412 knots. Typical cruise speed would be about 310 knots, and the Tutor Jet has a range of approximately 580 nautical miles.

Tutor Jet Cockpit
The Snowbird Tutor Jet Cockpit is awesome. The cockpit uses the standard “Steam Gauges” that were typical when the jet was designed and built over 50 years ago. Unlike the newer “Glass Cockpits”, the Tutor Jet relies on the traditional round gauges popular with aviators for many years.

Perfect T Flight Instruments
The primary flight gauges are arranged using the popular “Perfect T” formation that has been used in cockpits since the 1950′s.

The Attitude Indicator (AI) is located at the Top Centre. To the left of the Attitude Indicator, you will find the Air Speed Indicator, and the Altimeter is located to the right of the AI. Directly below the Attitude Indicator is the Heading Indicator (HI). These four primary instruments make a “Perfect T” formation.

The other two primary flight instruments, comprising the standard Six Pack of Flight Instruments, are located in the second row, to create the standard 6-pack formation of gauges. The Turn Coordinator (and Slip Indicator) is located directly to the left of the Heading Indicator, and the Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI) is located to the right of the HI. The Snowbird Tutor Jet also includes a Machmeter to demonstrate how fast the jet is flying in relation to the Speed of Sound.

g Limits
The Snowbird Tutor Jet is rated for plus 7.33g and minus 3g. These Acceleration Units, or g’s represent the range of G-Forces the aircraft can safely handle. 1g represents the standard gravitational force we experience in our atmosphere while at rest.

7g’s
A positive g-force of plus 7g would feel like our body weight was seven times what we normally experience. The Tutor Jet has an Accelerometer (or G-Meter) mounted at the front of the cockpit above the instrument panel dash.

The Accelerometer helps the pilot to monitor the g-Forces being exerted on the jet and pilot during flight. This is especially important during aerobatic performances. Unlike CF-18 Hornet Pilots, the Snowbird Pilots do not wear a g-suit to help them handle the g-forces experienced during their air show performances.

HOTAS
The Snowbird Jet Pilot uses the Throttle and Stick for controlling the aircraft throughout the flight. The abbreviation ‘HOTAS’ stands for “Hands On Throttle And Stick”, and by design the Throttle and Stick contain most of the buttons, switches and controls used throughout the flight. HOTAS design enables the Pilot to keep his “Hands On The Throttle And Stick” for most of his/her time in the cockpit. This helps the pilot to be continuously ready and engaged with the flight controls without interruption.

General Electric J85 Jet Engine
The Canadair CT-114 Tutor is powered by a single General Electric (GE) J85 CAN 40 Jet Engine. The GE J85 is a Two-Stage turbine with single-spool eight-stage, axial flow compressor.

The General Electric J85 Jet Engine produces approximately 3,000 lbs of thrust, and if equipped with afterburners, the engine can produce as much as 5,000 lbs of thrust.

Air Start
Located on the top of the throttle is the “Air Start” button allowing the pilot to “re-light” the engine by activating igniters. Raw fuel is then thrown onto the igniters to hopefully re-start the engine in the case of an emergency. Hopefully, the pilot will not need to use the Air Start Switch, but it’s an important back-up to have.

Nine Lines of Smoke
At the rear of the engine, the Snowbird Jet has two nozzles mounted directly in the path of the hot exhaust. These nozzles are used to spray pressurized diesel fuel into the hot exhaust instantly creating a highly visible path of white smoke. When flying in formation, the 9 Snowbird Jets create nine lines of smoke that can be seen for miles across the blue sky.

CF-18 Hornet vs. the Snowbirds
The CF-18 Hornet Jet may have more thrust, than all nine Snowbirds combined, but the Snowbirds have nine lines of smoke! The highly skilled pilots of the Canadian Forces are proud to fly either the CF-18 Hornet Jet, or the Snowbird Tutor Jet. But, only the Snowbirds have smoke!

Rudder Authority
The Snowbird Tutor Jet is an awesome training jet. The aircraft has incredible Rudder Authority with the large empennage and especially large rudder. During aerobatic performances, the pilots rely on the excellent rudder authority to maintain precision flight in tight formation with the rest of the Snowbirds.

Speed Brakes
The Snowbird Tutor Jet also has two very large Speed Brakes that extend from the sides of the rear fuselage. These speed brakes are deployed frequently during the Snowbirds Air Show performances to slow down the jets, and they are very effective. The Speed Brakes are engaged using the switch on the top of the throttle.

Watch the Speed Brakes Deploy in the Snowbirds Video as the team prepares to return to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) for a landing after they had performed a “Fly-By” formation flight along the length of Runway 23 at YYZ.

Thank-You Snowbirds!
The Canadian Forces Snowbirds are a highly respected and Iconic symbol representing all of Canada. Thanks to the Canadian Forces 431 Air Demonstration Squadron for their hard work, dedication and contribution to Canada. And, a special thanks to Captain Brett Parker, Snowbird 5, Second Line Astern. Thank-you Captain Parker for showing us what it’s like to fly a Snowbird Tutor Jet!

Thumb Up for the Snowbirds and Captain Brett Parker!

Robert Forrest’s Top 10 Pilot Tips

As a Pilot, make every choice based on Safety being your Top Priority.

Strive for excellence and be a professional at all times. Take pride in your Airmanship.

Study. Study. Study. The more knowledge you obtain - the more prepared you will be when the unexpected occurs.

Work on developing your Leadership Skills - as you advance in aviation this will become more and more important.

Don’t Improvise. Stick with what your instructors have shown you - especially during a flight test.

Never Rush. Always follow your checklists, and don’t let anybody or anything intimidate you into speeding things up.

Know how you react when placed outside of your comfort zone. Decision making skills may diminish. Aviate, Navigate, Communicate.

Debrief yourself after each flight. Think of things you could have done better and learn something new from every flight.

Don’t get discouraged. Becoming a good aviator takes lots of self-discipline, hard work, practice, patience, and time.

Don’t be afraid to talk to ATC (Air Traffic Control), FSS (Flight Service Station), or Transport Canada. They are there to help us fly safely.

License and Ratings
Rob currently holds a Private Pilot License with a Night Rating. He is currently enrolled in his final year of the Professional Pilot Program at Greenwood Flight Centre, and as he continues his aviation studies, Rob plans to obtain his Commercial Pilot License and Multi-IFR Ratings in 2013.

Aviation Career
It was a busy year for Rob. He continued his Aviation studies, as he successfully ranked as a Regional Finalist in the Webster Trophy Competition, and he also welcomed his new arrival – his baby daughter.

Never Give Up!
Robert loves flying, and he has one last tip for future Aviators. Never Give Up!

Flying is Robert’s passion, and he suggests that you always follow your dreams. Work hard for them, and never give up!

Keep up the great work Rob. It will be hard to top your achievements for 2012, but Never Give Up as you begin a new Year having been recognized as a Regional Finalist as one of Canada’s Top Amateur Pilots for 2012.
