Aspiring Pilots
The new pilot program is ideal for aspiring pilots. Sheridan College and Brampton Flight Centre will work together to provide students with a solid business education and Bachelor’s Degree coupled with extensive flight training. The program is expected to produce highly trained pilots with a deep knowledge base to prepare them to immediately work in the industry.

According to Rob Carney, Chief Flight Instructor (CFI) at BFC, graduates will be well prepared for ”Right Seat” (Co-Pilot) jobs with airlines. This is great news for the aviation industry, as a shortage of pilots is expected to create a significant demand for well trained, knowledgeable pilots in the very near future.

Looming Demand for Pilots
The BFC/Sheridan Program was initiated by Rob Carney (CFI @ BFC) in response to reports of a looming pilot shortage in the Global Aviation Industry. The Airlines are now looking for highly trained pilots with degree accreditation. This new program will help produce qualified pilots for the expanding pilot demand expected over the next two decades.

Pilot Shortage
A recent report by Boeing predicts there will be a tremendous demand for pilots in the very near future. Boeing estimates that in Canada and the United States, there is a looming demand for nearly 100,000 new commercial pilots. Boeing predicts the global demand will exceed 460,000 commercial pilots. According to Chris Pulley, Airline Check Pilot, there will be a doubling of the global airline fleet in the next 18 years. Industry experts anticipate there will be a demand of over 1,000 pilots per month to fly airplanes that have not even been built yet!

Bright Future
The Aviation Industry will be looking for qualified pilots and the hiring shift among commercial airlines will be to hire candidates with degree accreditation. Graduates from the Sheridan/BFC Collaborative Program will be well positioned with their degree foundation and advanced flight training.

Graduating Students
“Sheridan’s Bachelor of Applied Business (Global Business Management) Degree, combined with the world-class flight training the Brampton Flight Centre provides will make graduates from the program highly attractive to airlines”, said Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, President and CEO, Sheridan College.

Commercial Pilots are becoming increasingly more Global with their work and careers, and a degree in Global Business Management is a great foundation for graduating pilots.

Student Pilots are trained by their flight instructor about the importance of Pilot Checklists. And, the HASEL Check is an important checklist used by pilots before practicing flight manoeuvres such as slow flight, stalls, spins, spiral dives and steep turns.

Memory Aid
Like many pilot checklists, a mnemonic is used as a memory aid to help the pilot remember each item on the check list. Similar to the IM SAFE Pilot Checklist, each letter of the “HASEL” checklist is used to represent an important item on the list. The pilot uses the ‘HASEL’ mnemonic, and it helps him or her to remember to perform each of the required “Checks” before initiating a flight manoeuvre such as a Stall.

The pilot goes through each item, in order, and the ‘HASEL’ memory aid ensures an item is not skipped or forgotten.

Safety
The main purpose of the HASEL Checks is safety. Prior to practicing an unusual flight attitude or exercise, the HASEL checks help to ensure everything is safe and ready for the flight exercise to begin.

H.A.S.E.L. Checklist

H – Height

A – Area

S – Secure

E – Engine

L – Look out

Easy to Remember
As you can see, the HASEL Memory Aid makes this checklist very easy to remember. When flying, and you are about to perform a flight training exercise, you can easily recall the five items and perform each check. Let’s look at each of these check items in a bit more detail.

HEIGHT
The first Letter in the HASEL Checks is H for HEIGHT. Unlike stunt pilot Kent Pietsch, pictured here in his Interstate Cadet airplane, it’s very important to have sufficient altitude prior to attempting any unusual flight manoeuvres.

Trained stunt pilots may perform amazing stunts close to the ground, but all other pilots, must always remember that altitude is critical. You absolutely need a safe altitude to recover from the flight exercise, and height above the ground is very important. Make certain you have enough altitude above the ground to safely and easily recover from a stall before getting too low. A bare minimum of 2,000 feet above ground level (AGL) is required, and for additional safety, higher altitudes are strongly suggested. (Many instructors will suggest 3,500 feet or even 5,000 feet AGL) Your height above terrain must be sufficient to allow for full recovery well above the ground!

Many flight manoeuvres will cause a loss of altitude. After fully recovering from the manoeuvre, you want to be well above the ground, so plan ahead, and provide yourself lots of altitude for recovery.

AREA
A is for Area. Ensure the Area below you is safe for conducting flight exercises. Always be certain you are not over built-up areas. A clear and open area is suggested, and ideally there will be a safe place for landing nearby in case of emergency. Make certain the area is clear with no other traffic.

SECURE
The letter S in HASEL stands for Secure (or Security or Safety). Make sure all seat belts are securely fastened and all items including baggage are properly stowed. During an unusual flight attitude, you may find people and items are bounced around. A tight seat belt will keep you from bumping your head and injuring yourself, or potentially knocking yourself unconscious! All loose objects in the airplane must be safely secured to prevent an object from suddenly becoming a fast moving projectile inside the cockpit. All occupants and articles must be secure.

ENGINE
E is for Engine. Check Engine Temperatures, Carb Heat, Pressures, Tachometer, etc.

Turn Carburetor Heat on for a few seconds to clear any potential icing in the carb. Check for ice. Check all Cockpit Instruments to ensure the engine readings are all in the correct and normal range. Turn on fuel pump and other accessories as required.

Scan all cockpit gauges and be certain everything related to the Engine is operating correctly.

LOOK OUT
L is for Look Out. Scan for any possible air traffic, and ensure the entire area is clear. Look in all directions including above and below. Make certain you are clear of any other traffic including below your position.

It’s important to Look all around to avoid any potential traffic that may be encountered during your flight exercise. Make certain there are no aircraft around you or approaching your position.

Look out in all directions as you scan for traffic. It’s wise to do a complete 360 degree turn or 90 degree clearing turns as you look for any potential traffic, obstacles or issues that may be nearby. If you make a 360 degree turn, typically a turn to the left is preferred to provide a better view of the area below you. A series of 90 degree clearing turns may also be used. You may finish your HASEL Check with a couple of 90 degree clearing turns. First to the right and then to the left (or vice versa) to make absolutely certain there is no possibility of conflicting traffic in the area.

HASEL Check vs. HASELL Check

There may be slight variations to the HASEL Check including the HASELL Check. The goal of these checks is safety, and your flight instructor may use a slightly different mnemonic or memory aid, but they should all accomplish the same overall goal. Regardless of the specific Checklist you rely on, it’s important you use one of these Check Lists to ensure safe aviator practices.

The HASELL Checklist

H – Height

A – Airframe (Different from Area in the HASEL Check) (Airframe Clean? Flaps? Gear?)

S – Security

E – Engine

L – Location (The extra L is for Location) (Suitable location clear of controlled airspace, congested areas)

L – Look Out

Call Them Out
Regardless of the variation of checks you use, always call them out. As you perform the HASEL(L) Checklist, say each item out loud. This is a great practice. Not only does it help you to carefully use the checks every time, but it also tells your flight instructor (or examiner), that you know how important the HASEL Check is for the safety of everyone on board, and in the surrounding area.

Captain Erick O’Connor of Canadian Forces 409 Squadron, gives LearnToFly.ca Editor, Geoff McKay, his first lesson in the cockpit of a CF-18 Hornet Fighter Jet. The CF-18 is the primary front-line fighter in Canada, and it is used every day to protect the sovereignty of the country.

CF-18 Demonstration Team
The Canadian Forces CF-18 Demonstration Team was in Toronto for the Canadian International Air Show (CIAS) (a.k.a. CNE Air Show) for the 2011 Labour Day weekend. That’s when Geoff McKay met up with Captain Erick O’Connor for a tour of the CF-18 Hornet, and an introductory lesson in the cockpit of the Hornet. The CF-18 Hornet is an absolutely amazing jet.

CF-18 Performance
When you first climb in the cockpit, you quickly realize the CF-18 is more like a computer with wings and a pair of oversized jet engines. And, it’s fast. Very Fast. The CF-18 travels at twice the speed of sound, or 2,400 km/h. (1,600 mph).

G-Forces
The on-board computer limits the g-forces during flight manoeuvres to 7.5 +g’s and 3 -g’s. The combined speed and g-forces operating envelope provides for exceptional high speed manoeuvrability, including full aerobatic capabilities. During Captain Erick O’Connor’s demonstration flights over Toronto, he showed great restraint by keeping the CF-18′s flying speed below the speed of sound to ensure he did not break the sound barrier over the crowds at the CNE.

CF-18 Hornet Flight Lesson with Captain Erick O’Connor of 409 Squadron

Fly-By-Wire (FBW)
The Canadian Forces CF-18 Hornet is filled with amazing onboard technology including some of the most advanced flight control systems and some of the most sophisticated weapons technologies. The CF-18 is all Fly-By-Wire (FBW). In a conventional aircraft, the flight controls are manually controlled using pulleys and cables. However, with FBW, the flight controls are converted to electronic signals. These signals are then transmitted by wires (hence the “Fly-By-Wire” terminology) to the flight control computers. These onboard computers translate the inputs to determine movements of actuators managing each flight control surface.

The FBW system greatly enhances performance, stability, and manoeuvrability. With all the advanced technology onboard, Captain Erick describes himself as “just a contributor to the computer”. (@ 6:40 in the video above) But, Erick is just being modest. Don’t be fooled… Captain Erick is an astounding pilot!

Insane “Dirty Roll” Takeoff!
When Captain Erick O’Connor performs his takeoff in the CF-18 Hornet, it’s absolutely insane!

From this picture, you can see the incredible takeoff climb angle, but he then performs a “Dirty Roll” within milliseconds of being airborne. The CF-18 rolls over and continues through 360 degrees of roll until the jet is “rubber side down” once again.

Dirty Roll
During the roll, the landing gear is down, flaps are lowered, and everything is hanging out. (i.e. the aircraft configuration is “Dirty”. In a ”Clean” configuration, the gear and flaps would be retracted)

You have to see this INSANE takeoff to believe it. (@ 0:07 in the video above, and also @ 7:04 in the video)

CF-18 Aerobatics
The CF-18 flown by Captain Erick dazzles audiences all over North America. Captain Erick performs astonishing aerobatics in the CF-18 Hornet including looping manoeuvres, rolling manoeuvres, High-G 360 turns (@ 5:25 in the video above), inverted flight, vertical climbs, hesitation rolls, and his signature “Dirty Roll” on takeoff.

High G Vertical Pull-Up
Here you see the CF-18 Hornet in a High-G vertical pull-up, as the Hornet climbs to a straight up vertical position. (Click on the picture for a close-up view)

Ripping the Air
The CF-18 Hornet pictured here is ripping through the air, and strong vortices are spawning that generate very turbulent air currents over the wings, and at the wing tips. Despite this ridiculously high angle of attack, the Hornet is still able to generate aerodynamic lift and rocket through the air.

White Vapour – Not Smoke
That’s White Vapour, or mist you see swirling around the jet. It may look like smoke, but it’s moisture in the air condensing into cloud. The extremely high angle of attack during this high g pull-up causes powerful vortices to form around the edge of the CF-18 aircraft.

Bernoulli’s Principle
Bernoulli’s principle states that for any increase in speed of a fluid (or in this case the air), there occurs simultaneously a decrease in pressure. As the air rushes over the wing, and around surfaces such as the leading edge of the wing, the wing tips, and the missile shaped fuselage, it is diverted around the contour or shape of the object. The air particles (or parcel of air), must increase in velocity to travel a farther distance than its counterpart air parcel on the other side of the obstruction. When the air particles meet together again, the parcel of air that has been re-routed around the surface has travelled a longer distance in the same amount of time. To do this, it had to increase in velocity or speed. With the increase of velocity, there is an associated drop in pressure. With the drop in pressure, there is a resulting drop in air temperature.

The vortices and resultant turbulent air, and re-directed air parcels have a large drop in pressure. Proving Bernoulli’s Principle, this results in an accompanying temperature drop in the air parcels. The air is instantly cooled, and the amount of moisture that could previously be held in the air drops suddenly. The previously warmer air could hold a higher percentage of water particles. However, the now cooler air can no longer hold all the moisture, and it instantly condenses into water vapour or mist.

Physics 101
With the cooler air, the severe drop in temperature is sufficient to condense the normally invisible air into water causing the white “vapour” to be seen. Typically, wing tip vortices and other air disruption would not be visible, but with the extremely high velocity of the CF-18′s manoeuvre, and the pressure drop of air parcels, the moisture in the air condenses and the smoke like white “vapour” (or cloud) suddenly appears.

The science is amazing, but seeing this happen around the CF-18 Hornet as it is ripping through the air is truly spectacular!

McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet
The CF-18 Hornet is based on the American McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet. The 2011 CF-18 Demonstration Pilot, Captain Erick O’Connor is from 409 Squadron of the Canadian Forces located in Cold Lake, Alberta. The CF-18 Demonstration Jet is maintained from two Air Force Wings.

Fake Canopy
Painted on the bottom side of any Canadian Forces CF-18 Hornet is a “Fake Canopy”. (@ 3:09 in the video above) The outline of the canopy is painted in a black paint to create the illusion of the cockpit canopy on the grey underside. From a distance this looks remarkably like the real canopy on the reverse side. The strategy is to confuse the enemy with regard to the orientation of the aircraft, to give the Canadian pilots a slight advantage over enemy pilots and enemy ground personnel.

Paint Scheme
Pictured here, you see a pair of CF-18 Hornet Fighter Jets. The CF-18 in the back has the typical, mono colour, military grey paint scheme. In the front, however, we see the custom painted 2011 CF-18 Demonstration Jet.

The 2011 CF-18 Demonstration Team Jet has been specially painted to commemorate military families. The jet is adorned with a brilliant dorsal and tail artwork. The freehand airbrush and paint gun murals are beautifully painted in reds and blues.

Yellow Ribbon
This special design is accentuated by the iconic military yellow ribbon. This swirling yellow ribbon design loops around the cockpit, and extends down the jet’s back and wraps the twin tails.

Supporting Military Families
Painted on the red tail, you see a family. (@ 5:46 in the video above) The family theme is a big part of the CF-18 Demonstration Team’s work. The tail flash also displays the three elements of the Canadian Forces including the Air Force, Navy and Army. (@ 5:56 in the video above)

I love the cockpit in the CF-18 Hornet. As a Fly-By-Wire aircraft, the cockpit is primarily a computer centre.

For the younger generation, the cockpit feels like home. A familiar looking Joystick greets you instead of a traditional Yoke. The joystick control is centred, and the front panel has three, colour, digital displays surrounded by buttons.

The Joystick control includes a mouse-like interface allowing the computer user (a.k.a. Pilot), to move the “cursor” around to the different display screens to select options and controls, and cancel or select functions. (@ 1:28 in the video above)

Fully Customizable
The CF-18 Cockpit digital displays are fully customizable allowing the pilot to configure the displays for his or her personal preferences. For instance, the Targeting Pod, Radar, Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI), and Situational Awareness System (a.k.a. “God’s Eye View”) may be moved to any digital display for optimized viewing and accessibility.

Multiple Contributors
Amazingly, there can be multiple contributors where information and data from multiple, external sources (i.e. other aircraft in the formation) can automatically transmit critical data (such as radar activity) directly to the CF-18 screens. The pilot now has data augmented from multiple sources and integrated into his onboard display in the cockpit.

JHMCS
The CF-18 Hornet has the standard Heads Up Display (HUD) mounted in the pilot’s line of sight above the cockpit panel. But, the CF-18 is also equipped with JHMCS – Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System.

Pictured here, Captain Erick O’Connor is seen wearing the Helmet and Goggles that make up the JHMCS system. Those are not large sunglasses, but an incredible and sophisticated piece of technology. JHMCS enables the pilot to acquire targets via turning his head and looking at the target location as important cockpit information continues to be displayed before his eyes.

Boeing Technology
Developed by Boeing, the Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS) is a multi-role system that enhances pilot situational awareness and provides head-out control of aircraft targeting systems and sensors, accelerating the acquisition of enemy targets. (@ 3:25 in the video above)

The CF-18 Hornet is configured with both JHMCS and AIM-9X missile. This effective combination forms the High-Off-BoreSight (HOBS) system. HOBS is an airborne weapon-interception system enabling the pilot to accurately direct, or “cue” onboard weapons against enemy targets by merely pointing their heads at the target. The HOBS system guides the weapons, allowing the pilot to perform High-G flight manoeuvres during the attack.

Remarkable Aircraft
The Canadian Forces CF-18 Hornet is a truly remarkable aircraft. According to Hornet Pilot, Captain Erick O’Connor, “flying the CF-18 Hornet is easy”.

My First Lesson
After my personal tour of the CF-18 fighter jet, and my first in-cockpit lesson, I began to realize just how advanced this amazing aircraft truly is.

Transitioning from a Cessna 172, to a CF-18 should be the next rating every daring pilot should pursue

Learn To Fly a CF-18 Hornet
Special thanks to Captain Erick O’Connor of the 409 Squadron, the 2011 CF-18 Demonstration Team, and to the CIAS for making this day possible.

It was a great opportunity for LearnToFly.ca Editor, Geoff McKay, to receive a personal cockpit lesson in one of the most advanced aircraft in the skies today.

Dirty Roll
Lessons over… It’s time for a “Dirty Roll” on take-off in the Canadian Forces CF-18 Hornet!

Congratulations to the nine finalists in the 2011 Webster Memorial Trophy Competition. These finalists will compete for the coveted title as Canada’s Top Amateur Pilot of 2011. The final round of the competition will take place August 17-20, 2011 at Grondair in Saint-Frédéric, Quebec City.

100+ Milestone
This year, the Webster Trophy Competition broke the 100 plus Milestone with 105 applicants competing for the trophy. Applicants came from across Canada representing many Flight Schools to compete in the Regional phase of the competition. The nine top candidates will move forward to compete for the final prize and right to claim the John C. Webster Trophy and Bronze Webster Medallion.

Sponsors and Supporters
Thanks to all the wonderful Sponsors and Supporters of the competition who helped make 2011 an incredible year with over 100 applicants competing. LearnToFly.ca is a proud Supporter of the Webster Memorial Trophy Competition, and we were very excited to see this 100+ Milestone achieved this year.

The 100+ Milestone achievement is shared with all the participating Flight Training Units who encouraged their student pilots to join the competition. One of the main sponsors of the Webster Trophy Competition is Air Canada. Thanks are extended to all of the supporters and sponsors who provided many forms of support including financial assistance, prizes, media coverage and posters. This 100+ Milestone achievement could not have been accomplished without the overwhelming support and involvement of everyone involved.

John C. Webster
The Webster Memorial Trophy Competition is held each year in memory of the late John Webster. Sadly, John died in a fatal airplane accident in 1931 while practicing his aerobatic flying routine to represent Canada in the Trans-Canada Air Pageant.

Webster Trophy
The Webster Trophy resides permanently at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa. The Rockcliffe Flying Club has been chosen as the host school for the event and preparations are already under way for a major celebration, banquet and awards ceremony.

Early Bird Draw Winners
Webster competitors are encouraged to enter early. By waiting too long, many potential competitors miss the competition deadline. The applicant’s submission may be delayed due to unexpected delays in completing the required flight tests because of weather, scheduling or aircraft maintenance. To avoid disappointment, candidates are encouraged to enter long before the deadline approaches.

As an incentive, Early Bird Prizes are awarded.

The Webster Memorial Trophy Competition would not be the success it is without the dedicated and hard work of Flight Instructors across Canada.

With over 100 qualified candidates entering the Webster Trophy Competition this year, it was important to also recognize the hard work of the many dedicated Flight Instructors from Flight Schools across the country.

It takes many dedicated flight instructors to teach the eager student pilots and private pilots who compete in the Webster Competition each year. The tireless Flight Instructors help the individuals to prepare for the competition and be better candidates for the Top Amateur Pilot award.

Flight Instructor Draw
In order to honour the hard work of the Flight Instructors, a separate Flight Instructor Draw was established. The Flight Instructors named in the Applicant’s packages are eligible for recognition and prizes.

With the help of supporting organizations, the Flight Instructor Draw included wonderful prizes donated this year.

Congratulations and thanks to the Flight Instructors who helped to instruct and prepare the student pilots who competed in the 2011 Webster Memorial Trophy Competition.

The Cessna 172 is an ideal airplane for learning to fly. Your introductory discovery flight will be in a Cessna 172, and this is a favourite aircraft for many student pilots.

Skyhawk
The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a four-place, single engine aircraft. It is a fixed-wing aircraft, and the wing is located above the fuselage, making the Cessna 172 a high-wing aircraft.

The Cessna 172 was first manufactured in 1956, and they are still in production. Based on this longevity, and the popularity of the C-172, it is considered to be the most successful mass produced light aircraft in history.

Most pilots learned to fly, or have some flight experience in either the Cessna 172, or in its related two-place model the Cessna 152.

The Cessna 172 and the Cessna 152 aircraft are sturdy, reliable, and great for flight training. Chances are, you will spend many hours in a C-172 as you continue with your flying lessons. More recently, Cessna released their LSA category aircraft known as the Cessna 162 Skycatcher.

The 2011 Webster Memorial Trophy Competition is off to a great start with twenty one approved competitors already signed up.

Normally, applications for this annual competition do not start to arrive until the end of February. Even then, there are usually only a few early applications in the beginning of the year, with most of the applicants coming in much later. As the inviting spring weather approaches, pilots are thinking more about the fun of flying. That’s typically when the number of competitors builds progressively until the application cut-off date in June.

2011 Competition
It’s great to see there are already twenty-one competitors who have already applied and been accepted for this year’s competition. This is an excellent indicator of the awareness that the programme has generated recently and of the high degree of interest in participation by the aviation community.

Webster Memorial Trophy Competition
LearnToFly.ca is a proud supporter of the Webster Trophy Competition, and we are very excited about the great response for 2011. We encourage all Private Pilots to consider entering this excellent competition. This annual competition is open to Private Pilots in Canada. James Pouget was the 2010 winner of the Webster Trophy, and you could be the winner for 2011. But, first, you must apply!

2011 Target: 100+ Competitors
The Webster Team is striving to encourage a record number of competitors this year. They hope to break the 100 mark and by these early signs it seems to be a distinct possibility.

Be certain to browse these Top 10 Tips from last year’s Top Pilots if you want the inside scoop on how to succeed as a top pilot.

We’re thankful for the insightful and helpful tips from these top pilots, and we hope the tips they have compiled will help you become Canada’s Top Amateur Pilot for 2011.

June 15 2011
The Webster competition is a year-long event. It officially begins on June 16th of each year with applications being accepted for the annual competition. The applications are accepted until midnight EDT on the following June 15th. At that time, the nine regional finalists are determined and then announced on the next day. The competitors must complete and submit the application package, including the associated flight test reports, before the deadline to qualify. The national portion of the competition takes place in late August to determine the status of Top Amateur Pilot in Canada for the respective year.

The 2010 Competition Finalists are pictured here at the Webster Award Ceremony. Picture yourself at the 2011 Award Ceremony, after you enter and qualify!

Flight Training Units
The number of Flight Training Units participating in the Webster Trophy Competition increases significantly ever year. The flight schools have the added benefit of potential extra training revenue when their customers (pilots and student pilots) request additional flight training hours to prepare for the competition. The Flight Training Units can proactively encourage their members and customers to join the competition. These flight schools can also suggest the applicants book some additional training hours to compete more successfully in the competition.

$3,000 Award
Flight Training Units may also win the Webster/Sennheiser annual award of $3,000. This goes to the Flight Training Unit that successfully encourages the greatest number of pilots to enter. This award in turn is then applied to the additional training of up to four of the school’s applicants.

Extra Flight Training Revenue
Many Flight Training Units have come up with innovative ways of encouraging their members and students to participate. Some flight schools are offering cash bonuses to their instructors who encourage students to enter the Webster Trophy Competition. One school came up with the idea to then increase the Instructor bonus if their entrant(s) becomes a finalist and again if their entrant(s) becomes the winner.

One Flight Training Unit’s CFI is encouraging many of their excellent students to enter at the time of completing their flight test and applying for their licence. Another school is absorbing the administration fee of $25 to enter so that they can encourage their customers to enter. All these innovative ideas have been generated by the schools themselves adding to the overall excitement of the programme.

Young and Old
The Webster Memorial Trophy Competition is open to all amateur powered-pilots in Canada who hold a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or higher, regardless of their age or experience. The competition is both challenging and fun.

The competition has many benefits for all the competitors. They can test their skills, and in many cases enhance their safety through some additional preparation and training. The process also renews potential recency requirements for pilots.

Career Opportunities
For the competitors who become finalists, they receive great recognition within the aviation community across Canada. For private pilots considering a career in aviation, the contest could open numerous doors of opportunity.

This year the national portion of the competition takes place in Quebec, specifically being hosted by Grondair from August 17th to August 20th, 2011.

These universally defined colours and locations of the lights on an aircraft help pilots to determine if other aircraft are approaching or flying away, and their direction of flight. At night time, other aircraft would not be visible if they did not have lights. The navigation lights help pilots to determine if other aircraft are coming or going, and their relative position and direction.

Steady, Coloured Lights
The Left wing tip has a steady red light, and the right wing tip has a steady green light. The tail has a steady white light mounted as far aft as possible. These navigation or position lights are steady (non flashing) lights, and they must be visible from 2 miles.

Other Lights
In addition to the position lights, there will be other lights such as a landing light, fuselage lights, and anti-collision lights on an airplane. A landing light is often mounted on the leading edge of the wing. Anti-collision lights are also mounted in prominent locations on the aircraft such as the wing tips and the top of the tail.

Starboard Wing Tip Light
You can see the Green Navigation Light and also the Anti-Collision Strobe Light mounted in the right (starboard) wing tip of this airplane. The clear lens cover creates the form of the leading edge wing tip that houses these navigation and anti-collision lights.

Anti-Collision Lights
The anti-collision lights typically consist of white strobe lights or a red rotating beacon. Anti-collision lights are high intensity flashing lights that may be red, white or red/white segmented. These anti-collision lights must be visible through a 360 degree radius.

The pilot may turn off the anti-collision lights in some situations, such as hazy conditions at night. In conditions such as haze or dense cloud, the strobe light may cause a serious distraction or possible flicker vertigo effect on the pilot or passengers. Strobe lights have been known to induce epileptic seizures when individuals are exposed to the the intense flashing lights in close proximity. The pilot in command may temporarily turn off the anti-collision lights in situations where they feel a serious risk is present.

Port Wine is Red!
Here’s a great memory aid to help student pilots remember which side of the aircraft is Port, and which side is Starboard, and the colours of each.

Port Wine is red in colour. Therefore, the Port Side is always the Red Navigation Light. The Starboard side must therefore be the Green Navigation Light. In addition, “Port” is a four letter word. “Left” is also a four letter word. Therefore, “Port” matches up with “Left”. Both words are exactly four letters in length. Therefore, it’s easy to remember that the Port Side is the Left Side. (Port and Left are both 4 letters long)

Easy to Remember:

Port Wine is Red. Therefore, Port Nav Light is Red.

“Port” is 4 letters long, and “Left” is 4 letters long. Therefore, Port is Left.

Port = Red = Left

By process of elimination: Starboard = Green = Right

Cessna 172 Tail Lights
Here we see the Tail of a Cessna 172 aircraft. The Red Beacon Anti-Collision Light is mounted on the top of the tail where it is visible through 360 degrees. Mounted at the most aft position of the tail (right in the picture) we see the white Navigation (Position) Light.

The Red Anti-Collision Light is a Rotating Red Beacon Light. This powerful flashing light can be seen from a great distance and helps to alert other pilots to the presence of the aircraft to help avoid collision.

The Navigation Lights are steady lights. Therefore, the White Nav Light is a steady (non-flashing) light used to help other pilots identify the relative position of the aircraft in the sky at night. If you see the white navigation light, you will know you are looking at the tail of the aircraft, and the airplane must therefore be pointed away from you and not coming towards you.

Navigation Lights - Viewing Angles
The Navigation Lights are mounted on the aircraft in a very specific manner to ensure the exact field of view or viewing angles for each nav light.

Red and Green Nav Lights
The Red and Green Navigation Lights are visible from dead ahead (visible from front of aircraft) through 110 degrees to the side. This viewing angle ensures the nav lights are visible to other traffic from the front and side until the aircraft passes by.

White Navigation Light
The tail mounted White Navigation Light is visible through an angle of 140 degrees. With this being less than 180 degrees (straight line), it ensures the white nav light becomes visible to other air traffic once the airplane is passed by, and travelling away. This white light would be visible from any location behind the aircraft.

Aircraft Right of Way
The Navigation Lights on an aircraft also help pilots to recognize the Air Law Rights of Way. If you think of the Red Light as a Stop Sign, and the Green Light as Go, then you can determine the right-of-way in the situation illustrated here.

When two aircraft are converging on approximately the same heading, the aircraft which has the other on its right must give way.

Aircraft A
The Pilot of Aircraft A (Airplane on the Left in the diagram) will see the Red Navigation Light on the Port Side Wing Tip of Aircraft B. Therefore, the Pilot of Aircraft A must Give-Way to the aircraft (B) on is right.

Aircraft B
The Pilot of Aircraft B (Airplane on the Right in the diagram) will see the Green Navigation Light on the Starboard Side Wing Tip of Aircraft A. Therefore, the Pilot of Aircraft B may continue on its course with the right of way.

Don’t be Dead Right!
Remember, Pilots are always responsible to avoid a collision, right of way or not. The Pilot In Command (PIC) of an aircraft that has the right-of-way shall, if there is any risk of collision, take such action as necessary to avoid collision. Just because you may have the right of way, you must still take any action necessary to avoid a collision.

Relative Position
The Red, Green and White Navigation Lights will help you to quickly and easily identify the relative position of other airplanes at night.

With understanding of the location and colours of these important navigation lights, you can determine the orientation of other aircraft in the sky.

You see some Steady Lights in the Sky. What’s the Position of that other Airplane?

If you see both a Red and Green Light… You know the other airplane is coming at you.

If you see just a White Light… You know the other airplane is flying away from you.

If you see both a Red and White Light… You know the other airplane is moving from right to left as you see the Port side of the airplane.

If you see both a Green and White Light… You know the other airplane is moving from left to right as you see the Starboard side of the airplane.

Navigation Lights help pilots to determine the relative position of other aircraft. See and be Seen!

Webster Memorial Trophy Competition
The Webster Memorial Trophy Competition is an annual event intended to declare the “Top Amateur Pilot in Canada”. Special to LearnToFly.ca, these Top Amateur Pilots have been sharing their Top 10 Pilot Tips. These proven Aviators have great tips for anyone learning to fly. This is the fourth instalment in our series of Top 10 Piloting Tips, and Cameron MacLean has some excellent Flight Training Tips to share.

Flight Training
At the time of the competition, Cameron held a Private Pilot Licence and was moving toward a Commercial Licence through Coastal Pacific Aviation in Abbotsford, BC. Cameron also held a night rating.

Coastal Pacific Aviation Ltd.
Coastal Pacific offices and facilities are located at the Abbotsford International Airport. Their primary flight training facility is located in Abbotsford, British Columbia. They have been training pilots since 1974.

Loves to Fly
Cameron MacLean loves to fly! Cameron says his dad took him flying when he was just six weeks old and he has held an interest in aviation for as long as he can remember. It was in Grade 11, when Cameron decided he wanted a career in aviation. He made his decision that he would like to fly professionally and he began learning to fly in March 2009.

Cross Country
Exactly one year after Cameron’s first solo, he flew a cross country flight in a Piper Cherokee from North Bay, Ontario to Langley, British Columbia. Cameron’s father was in the right seat (co-pilot) with him when Cameron made this milestone flight.

Detailed flight planning is the foundation for a great flight.

Stay ahead of the aircraft. If you are not doing anything, there is probably something to do.

Different people have different limits. Know yours.

Be professional. People are always watching – even if you think they aren’t.

Know as much as you can about your aircraft and then some.

If you don’t know something ask somebody!

Aviation is a very small world. You will always run into someone you know so never burn bridges!

If you are not comfortable with something voice your opinion.

Aviate, Navigate, Communicate!

Have fun and take pride in everything you do.
